He was sworn into the United States Army at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas on November 30, 1942 and went on active duty on December 7, 1942, the anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack. After basic training where he qualified Expert rifle in his infantry training at Fort Bliss, El Paso, he was assigned for tank training. He received advanced training in the overall maintenance and operation of various types of tanks including amphibious tanks. He was assigned to Service Battery, 426th Armored Field Artillery Battalion. After training in the United States he was shipped out to the Philippine Islands on October 26, 1944 and landed on the islands on November 4, 1944. He saw duty in the Philippine Islands and was in training at Okinawa for the invasion of Japan. With the surrender of Japan he saw duty in the occupation of the islands. On December 23, 1945 he was shipped back to the United States for further transfer to the Separation Center at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas. He was released and returned to his hometown of Laredo, Texas. During his tour he received the Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, WWII Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon and Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon.
