He Joined the United States Marine Corps and completed basic training in San Diego, California. He received additional training at Camp Pendleton, California, Oceanside, California, Memphis, Tennessee, Chicago, Illinois, and Columbia, South Carolina. He was in Hilo, Hawaii in transit to Japan when the Japanese surrendered and ended WWII. He continued to Japan, and spent the remainder of his military service as part of an occupational force. He worked in transportation of supplies for allied forces until August of 1946. He received an honorable discharge in San Diego, California on August 24th, 1946.
