Activity During WWII

Rank: Private 1st Class. Inducted into the United States Marine Corps March 17, 1944 at Waterloo, Iowa and received his Basic Combat Infantry Training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. Served in the Pacific Theater and experienced combat as an Automatic Rifleman assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 21st Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine ‘The Fighting Third’ Division. Participated in the amphibious assault on the Volcanic Island of Iwo Jima (Battle Dates: February 19-March 26, 1945), Code Name: Operation Detachment. Thursday, February 22, 1945 he was killed in action and buried in the Third Marine Division battlefield cemetery on Iwo. Previously, he was involved in combat operations on Guam, Mariana Islands Campaign. After the cessation of hostilities with Japan, his remains were returned to his country and family, with interment in the Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery, Waterloo, Iowa on April 12, 1948. This Marine, an American Patriot, so gallantly gave his life for his country.
