He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June 1944 at age 17, and was stationed on the USS SHANGRI-LA during WWII. He worked his way up from the bottom to become a Chief Petty Officer, and then a Lieutenant Junior Grade. He had duty stations in Norfolk, Jacksonville, and San Diego. He also served aboard U.S. Navy ships the PECATONICA, the USS TUTUILA, and the guided missile cruiser, USS CANBERRA.
