Gunner's Mate Second Class, Anti-Aircraft Gunner. Enlisted at Indianapolis, Indiana, with boot training at U.S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Chicago, Illinois, and gunnery training at Dam Neck Gunnery School, Princess Anne County (Virginia Beach), Virginia. Developed tonsillitis and was hospitalized saving him from assignment aboard a ship which was sunk with all men aboard. While serving as clerk-typist at U.S. Naval Base-Algiers, New Orleans, volunteered for sea duty. Assigned to U.S. Navy gun crews aboard U.S. Merchant Marine Liberty Ships for voyages throughout the war's theaters of operation. While sailing in convoy of one hundred ships past England to Murmansk, Russia, was attacked by German E-boats, torpedoed, sunk and damaged all but five vessels. Sustained injury to both legs and left arm. Returned to Port of Embarkation-New Orleans, for hospitalization and recuperation. Transferred to Navy Pier-Chicago, then U.S. Personnel Separation Center, Great Lakes, for separation from the service.
