To help the war effort during WWII, he joined the United States Navy and went through boot camp at Navy Training Station, Farragut, Idaho. He had additional electronics schooling at Chicago Armory and the University of Houston, Texas. Following this training, he was transferred to Treasure Island, California. It was there that he was assigned to navy housing at Bremerton, Washington. he was then assigned to active duty aboard the USS Colorado. After a shake-down cruise off the coast of southern California, they went to the South Pacific. His assignment on board ship was top-side electronics technician's mate. He served aboard the USS Colorado for the duration of the war and was honorably discharged at Bremerton.
