117th Infantry, 30th Division 'Old Hickory', Company H, Heavy Mortar Gunner, 1607. He had basic training at Camp Butner, North Carolina with the 78th (Lightning) Infantry Division. He was trained as a rifleman. In Europe, in August of 1944, he was chosen to join the 117th Infantry by a soldier from Florence, Wisconsin who wanted a 'Wisconsin boy' to be his gunner or mortar man. Campaigns and battles: Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe. He helped liberate the city of Maastricht, Belgium and was in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Good Conduct Medal 45, and European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal. He was Honorably Discharged in December, 1945 with the rank of Corporal.
