Activity During WWII

Rank: Private 1st Class. Inducted into the United States Marine Corps December 7, 1942 and received his Combat Infantry Training at the Marine Corps Depot, San Diego, California. Served in the Pacific Theater and experienced combat as a machine gunner assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, First Marine ‘The Old Breed’ Division. He participated in the amphibious assault on the Island of Peleliu, one of the Palau Islands of the Western Pacific (Battle Dates: September 15-November 25, 1944), Code Name: Operation Stalemate II. Killed in action Sunday, September 17, 1944 and buried in the United States Armed Forces battlefield cemetery on Peleliu. Previously, he was involved in combat operations on Cape Gloucester located in the New Britain Islands. His remains returned to his family accompanied by a Marine Corps Honor Guard after the cessation of hostilities with Japan. Laid to rest in the McCallsburg Cemetery in McCallsburg, Iowa on December 30, 1950. This Marine, an American Patriot so gallantly gave his life for his country.
