Enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in WWII until March 1946. During his time deployed, he served as Seaman First Class, where he saw hostilities while serving in both the Mediterranean and Pacific. He was later attached to the U.S. Marines, 2nd Marine Division, B Company, Medical Platoon, as a pharmacist's mate seeing duty on Saipan and Okinawa and with U.S. Occupation Forces in Japan.
