Enlisted December 29, 1941 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Trained at Parris Island. Granted furlough for a week before leaving Parris Island on August 16, 1942. Arrived in San Diego on August 21. Set sail upon USS President Monroe on September 1 en route to Samoa in the Southwest Pacific. He arrived there on the 14th and stayed at the Harbor for only a short while. On September 23, he arrived in New Caledonia. This is where he spent the majority of his tour. He didn't leave New Caledonia until April 29, 1943. He arrived in San Francisco on May 16 and boarded the Army Transport U.S. Sea Witch to Camp Elliot in San Diego the next day. He was granted another furlough and spent this time in Philadelphia before being sent to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina on July 1, 1943.
