He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on September 13, 1943. On December 17, 1943, he was received on the USS Wichita CA-45. He served on the USS Wichita in the Pacific Theater of Operations for the duration of WWII. In August 1945, after the unconditional surrender, the USS Wichita was the first ship to enter the Nagasaki Harbor and began the evacuation of prisoners of war.
