He served in the U.S. Army with the 713th Bomb squadron of the 448th Bombardment Group from November 3, 1943 to November 24, 1945 and was discharged at rank of 2nd Lieutenant after many missions. On July 13, 1944 his plane received flak over the target resulting in an engine fire, the pilot headed to Switzerland where all ten crew members bailed out over Batterkinden, Emmental district, canton of Bern, Switzerland.
