Served in the Iowa National Guard prior to WWII. Inducted into U.S. Army February 10, 1941. Company F, 168th, 34th Division. Was in Company F, 133rd Infantry starting January, 1942. He was an original Darby Ranger, 1st Battalion, Company B. June, 1943, AND was in the 3rd Battalion, Company C. He was in the 4th Battalion, Company E after Cisterna AND was with Headquarters behind the 4th Battalion when the 1st and 3rd Battalion were captured. He got out of the Army in 1945 and re-enlisted after WWII.
