In 1941, he went to San Diego, California, and worked in an aircraft factory before being drafted into the United States Army Air Corps where he served as a tail gunner on a B-17 bomber. While serving, he was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, the WWII Victory Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal.
