He served on the aircraft carrier USS St. Lo in the Pacific Theater of operations. During the liberation of the Philippine Islands, his ship was sunk at the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Wounded himself, he gave up his life vest to a stricken comrade, until retrieved by the USS Butler. He was highly decorated for his sacrifices and personal valor.
