He enlisted at Patterson Field, Dayton, Ohio. He was in the Army Air Corps 5th Transport Unit which went to General Mitchell Field near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In time the 5th Transport Unit helped train paratroopers at Ft. Benning in Georgia. He was sent to the Fiji islands where he was in charge of a motor pool and refueling unit as a Staff Sergeant.
