Served in the Army's 66th Infantry Black Panther division in WWII as a Private First Class. He survived the torpedo attack and sinking of the troopship Leopoldville in the English Channel on December 24, 1944. He was awarded the Bronze Star, and the Combat Infantryman Badge among other awards from both the U.S and France.
