Enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 at age 17. He trained as a corpsman, eventually attaining the rank of Pharmacist's Mate First Class. In 1943, he was transferred to 3rd Battalion, 22nd Marines, and assigned to the Marine Corps Amphibious Base in Coronado, California. At the end of the War, he was on a transport headed for Japan to participate in the invasion of the Japanese mainland.
