Activity During WWII

He entered the U.S. Army in September, 1946. He attended basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He learned field artillery (105 Howitzer). In December, 1946, he was shipped to Japan aboard the Haverford Victory as part of the occupation troops after the war ended. Approximately 2500 personnel made the trip in 16 days. They encountered a typhoon and 30-foot waves. They landed in Yokohama and went to the 4th Replacement Depot for two days. He was then transported by railroad to Ota, Japan and the 61st Field Artillery unit, Battalion C Battery. They took trucks to other towns and marched through the streets on double time. He trained in firing howitzers in nearby mountains. He served in guard duty and KP. They did 20-25 mile marches with field packs. After about a year, he was transferred to the 8th Army Headquarters in Yokohama, the town where the war trials were taking place. There, he learned typing and clerical work and was assigned to the G-4 section of the 8th Army Headquarters. He left Japan and was honorably discharged on July 15, 1948 and later served in Korea.
