HE enlisted in the Navy on 25 August 1943 and went to boot camp at the Naval Training Station in Newport, Rhode Island. He also completed 5 weeks training at Fleet Sound School in Key West, Florida. Served on the USS Cofer, a Destroyer Escort, making two trips across the Atlantic to Gibraltar and Algiers from the home port in Brooklyn, New York. He also served on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific while the ship made incursions into the Philippine Islands, establishing camps to support the troops that were moving towards Japan. At the end of the war, he went to Japan. Awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Medal, Philippine Liberation Theater Medal with 1 star, American Theater Medal and Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal with 2 Stars. He was honorably discharged on 28 February, 1946.
