HE was inducted into the U.S. Army on 29 July 1943 at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. Completed training as a Rifleman–745, qualifying as a Marksman on 7 October 1943. As a member of the 30th Infantry, Company F, he left the U.S. on 30 January 1944, arriving in Europe on 9 February 1944. HE Fought in the Italian Campaign, landing at Anzio Beachhead in 1945. During battle, HE and six other soldiers were stuck in trenches for two days. His feet were freezing and he was facing surgery but two German surgeons saved him. Awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 1 Battle Star. He left Europe on 9 February 1944 arriving in the U.S. on 10 JULY 1944 and was honorably discharged in late 1944.
