Enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on 27 April 1942. He completed Marksman training on 2 June 1942 and qualified as Rifle Sharpshooter 12 April 1945. He served in Cuba from 18 September 1942 to 4 October 1942. Machine gunner in the 9th Marine Defense Battalion in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater participating in action against the enemy at Guadalcanal from 3 December 1942 to 9 February 1943; at New Georgia Island from 15 August 1943 to 19 January 1944; and Guam, Mariana Islands from 25 January 1944 to 10 August 1944. During his service he was promoted to Corporal. He also had special military qualifications as a Bandsman with both the Coronet and the Trumpet. Honorably discharged on 5 October 1945.
