Activity During WWII

He registered for the draft at age 18 and subsequently joined the U.S. Merchant Marine. He served on the USAT Sea Cat, a troop transport ship, making trips to France, England, Manila and Hawaii. He asked to be assigned to the Engine Room because of the challenge it brought, knowing it could be the target of attack. He was later promoted to an officer’s position—Junior Assistant Engineer.
