He was a Army Ranger Commanding Officer and part of 'Darby's Rangers'. He was killed on April 30, 1945 while issuing orders on an attack of the town of Trento. He was awarded the Distinguished service cross with oak leaf clusters, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart with two oak leaf clusters, American Defense Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern campaign stars, WWII victory medal, Croix De Guerre with silver star.
