He enlisted in the U.S. Army on February 9, 1942 from Camp Lee, Virginia. His early assignments included Battalion B, 10th Coast Artillery Training Battalion, Fort Eustis, Virginia, March, 1942, and, Battery H, 605th Coast Artillery, Camp Stewart, Georgia, May, 1942. His last deployment took him to the China-Burma-India Theater of war with the 683rd Airborne, with duties as a heavy machine gunner. He received the Silver Star prior to his honorable discharge on March 25, 1945.
