Activity During WWII

He was a 1936 graduate of University of Virginia and 1940 Virginia Theological Seminary. Left his two churches, St. John's in McLean, Virginia and Holy Comforter in Vienna, Virginia in July 1942 when he began Army Chaplains' School training at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indianapolis. In May 1943 he sailed from New York as the chaplain for the 314th Troop Carrier Group. He served in North Africa, Sicily, and England with the 314th Troop Carrier Group. In August 1944, he became a paratrooper with and chaplain of the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He served in the Battle of the Bulge in France, Belgium, and Luxembourg and was killed while jumping with the 17th Airborne Division into Flurenfeld (near Wesel), Germany on March 24, 1945 during Operation Varsity, the largest one-day air assault in history. He is buried at Margraten U. S. Military Cemetery near Maastricht, Netherlands.
