served aboard the merchant tanker David McKelvy which was torpedoed by German u-506 on may 14, 1942 35 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi river. u-506 was sunk by depth charges dropped by a b-24 'liberator' bomber on July 12, 1943 in the north Atlantic west of Vigo, Spain.
