He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps where he rose to the rank of Captain in the 50th Troop Carrier Squadron and participated in six European Theater Operations Campaigns. Flying a C-47, he dropped paratroopers in Italy and Holland and also participated in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day. He was awarded the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and earned two Presidential Unit Citations.
