At the age of 16, she spotted for enemy planes atop the roof of Polk County's courthouse in Bartow, Florida as part of the U.S. Army Air Forces Aircraft Warning Service. She and a friend worked two-hour shifts after school. This activity was shut down in May 1944 when the War Department determined the Aircraft Warning Service was no longer needed because the war was being fought overseas.
