Activity During WWII

Served in the U.S. Navy Armed Guard as a Gunner's Mate aboard armed merchant vessels (Liberty Ships). Served aboard the USS Wilmette (training ship), the SS Samuel Q. Brown (torpedoed and sunk on May 23, 1942 by German submarine U-103), the SS Abraham Baldwin, the SS Nathaniel Macon, the SS William Kent (participated in the D-Day invasion at Normandy), and the SS Benjamin F. Costin. Awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, the Navy Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal. Served from January, 1942 to October, 1945.
