He was drafted at age 19 and entered the U.S. Army on May 3rd, 1944 at Ft Thomas, Kentucky. He completed U.S. Army Infantry Basic Training at Ft. McClellan, Alabama and shipped to France arriving on November 2nd, 1944. Around November 20th 1944 he was assigned as a Rifleman in Company L of the 134th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division. He was wounded in combat on Nov 24th 1944 by a German "88" artillery shell explosion about one mile southwest of Puttelange-aux-Lacs, France. After a month in hospital near Paris, he rejoined company L near Lutrebois, Belgium as they attacked toward Bastogne to relieve US Army troops surrounded there during the Battle of the Bulge. During April 14th 1945 his unit moved 250 miles across Northern Germany finally stopping on April 15th 1945, at the village of Sandfurth Germany on the Elbe River 50 miles from Berlin. At night they could see the light from Berlin burning. His unit spent several months performing military occupation duty in Germany and then on August 16, 1945 were sent to England where on September 5th 1945 the 35th Infantry Division sailed home on the Queen Mary arriving in New York on September 10th 1945
