He was inducted into the U.S. Army at Fort Des Moines on 1 December 1941 at the age of 24. After stateside training he departed with the 146th Armored Signal Corps for England on 5 September 1943. His unit landed in Normandy on 19 July 1944. For the rest of the war he served as a Messenger Driver in the Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. He was honorably discharged from service on 27 September 1945.
