Served for years in the Texas National Guard, Company E, 143rd Infantry when in November 1940, Company E was mobilized. He attended Infantry School at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas in January 1941 where he received his Combat Infantryman's Badge. Worked at Camp Bowie and Camp Blanding training inductees in infantry basics. Departed for overseas duty on April 2, 1943. He served in the European Theaters of Operation, in Africa and Italy as a Platoon Sergeant. He Supervised the work of 45 enlisted personnel and placed them in the most advantageous spots to concentrate the most effective fire power. Took squads out on scouting patrol. Used maps and compass to figure routes of advance and withdrawal. On September 19, 1943 he was captured in Salerno, Italy and taken as a Prisoner of War by the German Government. He was held in Stalag IIIB prison camp in Furstenberg and Brandenburg, Prussia where he was held for a total of 1 year, 7 months and 2 days until his release on April 22, 1945. After his release from prison camp, he spent several months in different hospitals recovering from severe malnutrition. He returned home to Caldwell, Texas in July 1945. He received an Honorable Discharge from the Army in November of 1945. His decorations during his military service include the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon and American Defense Service Ribbon.
