He was drafted into the Army, joining the 197th Anti-aircraft artillery Battalion, Battery D, as a gun crewman. He was 19 when he took part in the D-Day invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. His left leg was injured later that year, and he had several operations to save his leg at Ashford General Hospital, which was the converted Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia. He was awarded a Purple Heart, and he was discharged on May 22, 1946.
