At 20 years of age, he enlisted in the Army of the United States. He served in the 710th Squadron, 447th Bombardment Group (H). He flew numerous missions on the B-17G aircraft. For the courage, presence of mind and devotion to duty while engaged in aerial combat, he received many medals and commendations such as the Bronze Star, Air Medal, and Oak Leaf Cluster.
