Enlisted in the Army at Fort Worden, Washington, in 1936, at the age of 16. He retired in 1992 after completing 26 years of active duty. He served in Washington State, the Canal Zone, Bogata, Columbia Alaska, Korea, Fort Benning, Georgia, Fort Riley and numerous other assignments. He served with the 1st Infantry Division in Europe during WWII. He also saw combat in the Korean War.
