Activity During WWII

He was a member of the crew of the Destroyer (DD) USS Hoel (DD-533) serving as a Chief Gunner's Mate. The USS Hoel, under the command of Commander Leon S. Kintberger, was a member of Escort Carrier Task Unit 77.4.3 (Taffy 3). He was killed in action during the Battle Off Samar October 25, 1944, which was part of the overall Battle Of Leyte Gulf (The Philippine Islands) October 25-28, 1944. The crew of the USS Hoel was awarded both the U.S. Presidential Unit Citation and the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation. The USS Hoel also was awarded five(5) Battle Stars for WWII service.
