He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces and was sent to officer's training school in Syracuse, New York. He was a navigator during WWII and flew 15 missions in his plane 'The Irish Lullaby' from their station in the South Pacific. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart. He retired as a second lieutenant at the end of WWII.
