He enlisted in U.S. Navy's Seabee Unit, 32nd U.S. Naval Battalion, and completed his boot camp at Endicott, Rhode Island. He was sent overseas on 6 May 1945. His unit went into Nagasaki, Japan after the 'A' bomb was dropped. He was discharged fourteen months later and returned to his home in Wayne, Michigan.
