When he first entered the Merchant Marine, he entered as a Messman, where on his first two deployments to the South Pacific he served in the Officers Mess Hall serving food. On his Third deployment to Japan, he was promoted to the rank if Seaman where he was responsible for maintaining the ship's deck.
