He graduated from Officer Candidate School, Corps of Engineers, Fort Belvoir, Virginia in 1943. He served at 1st Lieutenant in the 1392 Engineer Forestry Company in the European Theater of War. He supervised and coordinated the production of portable sawmills and logging equipment for the U.S. Army in Europe.
