In 1943 he joined the United States Army. He served in the Battle of New Guinea and was part of General Douglas MacArthur's force who helped liberate the Philippine Islands. He witnessed the Prisoner of War camps in Manila and he was a paratrooper. He spent a year in Japan as part of the occupation army.
