Served under General George Patton in the 3rd Army. He was a telegraph operator serving in the signal corps. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was crossing the Rhine River when the Germans released flood waters on his unit trying to drown them. The water got up to His waist. Two assistants who were stationed on either side of him were both killed during one of the battles he was in.
