He served in the United States Army in Europe with Company B, 22nd Tank Battalion, 11th Armored Division. In January 1945, during the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes, he saw his first action. While riding in the turret of an M4 Sherman tank which was leading a tank column east from the Bastogne area, they confronted a German 88 gun which fired a shell, hitting on the front of the M4. His tank returned the fire, hitting and upending the German gun, allowing the tank column to continue toward Germany.
