He joined the U.S. Navy in January, 1942 and served in the Pacific theater of Operations on the destroyer, USS Duncan, which was sunk in its first engagement at the Battle of Cape Esperance, the Second Battle of Savo Island. After spending 16 hours in the water, he was pulled out and ultimately sent back to the Boston Naval Shipyard where he was reassigned to the Destroyer USS Bennett, on which he went back to the Pacific Theater and participated in every Pacific engagement, except the Battle of Tarawa.
