He proudly served his country when after high school he spent one year in the Army Specialized Training Program at the University of Illinois before joining the Army’s 102nd 'Ozark' Infantry Division as a rifleman and radio operator. His unit landed at Cherbourg, France in September of 1944 and fought through Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany in 1944 and 1945.
