Upon graduation from high school in 1940 he enlisted and proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. He served with the 1st Marine Division in the Pacific from 1940 to 1945 surviving 27 months in the Southwest Pacific and several bouts of malaria. He was in a mortar outfit at Guadalcanal, New Guinea, Cape Gloucester, and New Britain. He was received a Presidential Unit Citation and a Division Commander’s Commendation.
