He served from November, 1942 until October, 1945. Serving with the 5th Army in Africa and Italy, he was skilled in operating and repairing half-tracks and wheeled vehicles. He participated in the liberation of Florence, Italy in 1944. Among the awards he earned were the Good Conduct Medal, Rifle Sharpshooter Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Drive and Mechanic Badge, T and W, and the Coastal Artillery Badge.
