enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943. He became a Platoon Sergeant in the Fifth Ranger Battalion of the 35th Infantry Division, and was in the Normandy invasion. His unit’s assignment was to link up with another unit about one half mile off the beach. He was wounded several times and earned two Purple Hearts plus the Bronze and Silver Stars.
