He enlisted prior to Pearl Harbor and was stationed in Iceland. After Pearl Harbor he was sent to New Zealand for preparation to engage the Japanese. He participated in the Guadalcanal victory, then went to Tarawa, Saipan and Tinian. At Tinian his platoon dismantled a 75M howitzer, lowering it to caves below and assembled it so as to direct fire from the ships into the enemy caves of the cliffs.
